Sunday In Arizona – Uber Autonomous Fatal Pedestrian Car Crash – Will a Self-Driving Tractor-Trailer Be Next?

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 20, 2018

1st – At TruckUSA.com you get a FAST instant cash offer, we buy trucks, and our sole purpose is for you to sell your truck to us. All opinions are my own (writer) and do not in any way reflect TruckBuyerUSA.com’s opinions or views. I just brought this up on the blog last week. That dreaded pit in your stomach, devastating nightmare came to fruition. No, it didn’t involve an autonomous truck, nor was there a hack – that I know of since this is still under investigation by authorities, but non-the-less, this is a tragedy that anyone could have predicted and possibly prevented. On Sunday, in Arizona, an Uber autonomous fatal pedestrian involved car crash occurred in the night. Will a self-driving tractor-trailer be next?

In Tempe, Arizona, a routine Uber autonomous car test drive - turned to everyone’s nightmare. Uber routinely tests their self-driving cars after dark to observe the response of their vehicles in more challenged environments. Of course, a safety ride-along operator was at the wheel hands free monitoring the cars operation. So, what happened? What was the “monitor” monitoring? Why didn’t the car’s sensors – assuming it has these – sense a person, object, motion, etc. in its path and react accordingly and safely? What are the setting indicators of said objects? How much time did the vehicle and the “monitor guy” have to react before the car crash? Would there be the same results in a big box truck? Would there have been a truck crash? You know an autonomous truck is no joke and the damage it could do is unthinkable. I can’t imagine an autonomous tractor-trailer’s destruction and devastation. Did it turn a corner and it all happened faster than anyone or the autonomous car could respond as required and expected? These are just a handful of questions I have, there are so many more.

Autonomous developers, manufactures, and testers, this is a big fail at its worst. This should have been avoided at all costs, and not have happened. I shouldn’t be sitting here writing about a pedestrian being struck while crossing the street and dying on the way to the hospital. I should only be focused on your technological successes, not tragedies related – yes, tragedies because this is the 3rd reported death involving autonomous vehicles. All of us send our deepest sympathy to the victim’s family and friends. We are very sorry for this tragedy and your loss.

Uber is fully cooperating in the investigation by the Tempe, Arizona police, and the mayor is diligently looking into the accident combing through city and state regulations. Arizona seems to be company’s favorable state for their lenient laws and rules when it comes to experimenting and testing technology, according to a recent Bloomberg interview.

In Tesla’s Florida crash, the car was purchased by and used by the victim. In the Arizona crash, the vehicle was a test vehicle under the control in every sense by Uber, and the victim was an ordinary person.”

~Bryant Walker Smith, Professor, USC School of Law

When asked if Arizona’s fatal crash will shake the public’s confidence in autonomous technology and set its progress to date back, Smith went on to say,

"It will set consumer confidence in the technology back years if not decades," said Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, a Washington-based advocacy group. "We need to slow down."

What do I think about autonomous vehicles, especially a tractor-trailer on the road? I’m still on the fence and do not want to be involved in a truck crash that supposedly wouldn’t happen. I NEED to see the facts of compulsive off-road testing in a strictly controlled environment. Dig through accident report, test the “that’ll never happens”, schedule it in the worst climatic conditions, test each during the day and at night, during rush hour, during quiet times, in fabricated neighborhoods with unexpected objects forced in the path of the vehicles, and any other scenario you can think of. Then, maybe just then, test it on the roads.

Note: TruckBuyerUSA.com did NOT provide me with direction or information, nor did they request I write a post on my views.

Directly from Tesla’s website:

Safest Truck Ever

Enhanced Autopilot helps avoid collisions, a centered driver position provides maximum visibility and control, and a low center of gravity offers rollover protection.”

That’s a very bold statement. If you’d like to see their technology advances on wheels, go check them out and read about them. I will say this, it’s impressive.

If I lived in Arizona and I saw an autonomous truck or car anywhere near me, I’d probably freeze out of fear. I’d be afraid I’d be the one to prove “it’s safer than a truck driven by a hands on the wheel driver” wrong, but can you blame me after Sunday in Arizona? Uber, your autonomous fatal pedestrian car crash has me so much more fearful of this technology than last week. I never want the answer to “will a self-driving tractor-trailer be next?” I’d rather sell my truck to Truck Buyer USA, order everything I need online, and have it delivered right to my front door. Which reminds me, when you’re thinking you could use extra cash or just want to get rid of your truck, we buy trucks in any condition – even if it’s been in a truck crash – anywhere in the continental United States, running or not. If “sell my truck” crosses your mind, sell your truck to us! Our process is FAST, SAFE, and EASY! We’ll give you the highest instant cash offer you’ll find anywhere else on the web and you’ll get it in as little as 20-seconds! We don’t mess around! Uber Trucks Are Shuttling Goods Across the State of Arizona – No Driver Required

Joseph Coupal - Sunday, March 11, 2018

What truck news is a buzz right now? That would be Uber trucks; they’re shuttling goods across the state of Arizona with no driver at the wheel. That’s right, a driver is not required and you won’t find one holding steady at 10 and 2 o’clock! How’s that for technological advances? And, is there an app for that? Who knows? Maybe one day Truck Buyer USA will be sending an autonomous tow truck when you sell your truck to us!

In Uber’s existing program, a trucker at Arizona’s state border, who then rides along in the driver ’s seat across the state but only to monitor the autonomous trip; not to drive it, meets a self-driving truck. Once the truck has reached its destination, the load is handed off to a conventional trucker who then delivers the haul to its final destination.

Ok, I’m not even going to go into all the things that could go wrong when – notice the word when – this is common practice in the transport business, but I will say this. What is going to happen if a hacker hacks into the computer system? A semi is not something I’d want to have an encounter with. Just sayin’.

However, there are some good things to note here.

First, drivers are only allowed to clock so many hours of straight driving. If technology continues and any kinks in the system are worked out so tight this is a safe practice, then truckers can sleep while the truck rolls on down the road. This brings me to my next note.

Second, time is money for a trucker, so regardless they’ll get their road hours in and continue to collect payment as normal… for now. Speaking of time, a truck will reach its destination sooner than the conventional process – stopping at a truck stop to sleep. This means more business for the trucking company, and the trucker for that matter, because being able to safely deliver goods at a faster rate will definitely increase business. That’s a no brainer.

We’re not in the transporting for long-hauls, but we do buy trucks and you can sell your truck to us without ever leaving your couch. This new technology may not be in our near future, but we buy trucks, any truck, in any condition anywhere in the continental United States. Uber’s new program may not seem the safest now, but we’ve all watched science fiction and we’ve seen what’s coming. In the meantime, we’ll leave it to Uber to shuttle goods across the state of Arizona with their fancy shmancy technology, and we’ll continue to send a tow truck driver to pick up your truck with a human driving it. We prefer to keep it 100% SAFE, FAST, and EASY! You won’t see a self-driving truck take your car away fast, but you will get a high instant cash offer and have cash in your bank fast. How’s that for truck news technology? Get started now and sell your truck! Just fill out our short form – it’s an easy 2-step process – and one of our live agents will be in touch soon!

NYS Thruway & Other Highways Ban Tractor-Trailers, Buses & Box Trucks During Storms

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, March 07, 2018

As of 8:30 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, the New York State, I-90, Thruway just got safer for New York and other northern commuters during storms. I-90 – exit 36, Syracuse – all the way down to the New York City line has banned tractor-trailers, box trucks, buses, and other big vehicles from using them during winter storm warnings. This is a big win for commuters and an obviously big blog to companies that depend on high-profile vehicles for their business.

Officials stated drivers who violate the ban could be ticketed. My question is, what if they are unexpectedly caught in a storm? Do they pull over into the emergency lane and wait it out? Are they allowed to drive to the nearest exit having a truck stop? I’m sure there are caveats in place; if not and they’re expected to pull over and ride it out the inherent dangers for the drivers are high risk ones. Getting plowed in and stuck in the middle of nowhere will be the least of their worries.

Truck Buyer USA goes anywhere in the Continental United States and we buy trucks for top dollar, even sparsely populated places like upstate New York. So, we’ve seen the havoc a winter storm pelts residents with and we definitely wouldn’t want to be forced to pull over and ride out a storm. But if you’re caught in a snow storm and want to sell your truck, you’re in luck! We give you an unbeatable instant cash offer and we’ve got you covered!

On a personal note, I have first-hand experience driving in upstate NY winter storms and let me tell ya’, it is NOT fun and can be downright scary more often than not. My scariest moment was traveling on I-88, deep snow covered the road and when I saw the semi coming up behind me and the railroad underpass ahead of me, I knew right then it was going to be bad. Big trucks like that can travel at a pretty fast speed because of their weight and truth be told, I’ve used that to my advantage on many occasions… they clear the path! But this day? This day there was no chance to ride the big trucks coat tails and get home faster. This day he went flying by me in the fast lane with that underpass literally about 100 feet away. Ever heard of a white out? It’s as if someone has thrown a thick white tarp over your windshield and you can see NOTHING but a blanket of white. I literally didn’t know if I would hit the wall or coast (and I do mean coast because my foot was not the gas or brake pedal!) right on through. Luckily the coast was clear.

Roadways Banning Large Vehicles

  • I-90 from Syracuse (Exit 36) to the New York City line -- including Berkshire Spur to the Massachusetts State Line, Interstate 95, the Garden State Parkway Connector and Interstate 287
  • I-88 from Binghamton to Albany
  • I-81 – Pennsylvania state line to the NYS Thruway
  • Route 17 – Binghamton to Interstate 84
  • I-84 from the Connecticut state line to the Pennsylvania state line
  • I-684 from I-84 to I-287

TruckBuyerUSA.com won’t let winter storm warnings get in the way when you want to sell your truck. Even if you own a damaged truck, we’ll still come to you and give you the highest cash payout you’ll get anywhere else for it. Use our 2-step process for your 20-second instant cash offer and then one of our agents will be in touch. We buy trucks FAST, SAFE, and EASY and you can stay by the fireplace through the entire process sipping that hot chocolate to do it! Well, you will need to answer the door so we can get the keys and the title, but it’s that easy!

2018 Best Resale List – Trucks and A Rally Car

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 05, 2018

What should go into factoring the cost of a truck? The sale price is only a fraction of the equation and the resale value needs to go into the mix so you get the most money when you go to sell your truck. We’ve all been told for years trucks hold their value better than cars, but some’s value drops faster than others. What’s the buzz on 2018’s best resale list? It’s all about trucks and a rally car.

Minimizing vehicle depreciation may not always be at the forefront of your mind when buying a new truck or SUV, but everyone wants the loss of value rate to be low. We’re sure it will come as no surprise that Toyota 4x4s top off the as the best bet. If you’ve shopped for a used Tundra, Tacoma, or 4Runner then you know the resale values are strong and can be pricey. This is a good time to mention, we buy trucks at top value offering you the highest resale value and we beat KBB®’s numbers. Get an instant cash offer from us in as little as 20-seconds!

There you have it, the top 10 2018 best resale list! The trucks and a rally car take the lead. It’s odd that Kelly Blue Book® has the 2018 Toyota Tundra beating out the 2018 Toyota 4Runner. Not sure what the reasoning is, but, KBB® is always a few days behind on the used car and truck values. So it comes as no surprise the 2nd and 3rd place would come out a little wonky. It takes days for their data banks to trickle down the information they enter on resale values. That means those “current number values of the day” were current days ago. Not today. If you want to know what the real current value of your truck is today, then ask us. Get an instant cash offer FAST, SAFE, and EASY RIGHT NOW and sell your truck to us! In as little as 20-seconds!
